Chapter 5
Callie
I’m a survivor. It’s what I do. Survive my parents leaving me. Check. Survive six foster homes. Check. Survive breaking up with the love of my life. Well, it’s too soon to tell. I’ve given myself a week to grieve, but hell, I still don’t think it’s long enough. I’ve been walking around like a zombie and every makeup artist and clothing alterer in town is complaining because I’m causing them extra work with my red swollen eyes, bags under my eyes and losing weight.
I didn’t go back to the bar. Let’s face it, I was there so I could be close to Gabe. I don’t need the money any more. My checks for modeling have been coming in and I can support myself with those easily.
I’m sitting in front of the mirror and I have my eyes closed because they just put in Visine to try and get rid of the redness. When I open them, the model, Tabby, that was going to go out with Gabe sits down in the chair next to me.
I flinch when I catch her gaze in the mirror. I look away but that doesn’t stop her from talking to me.
“Where’s that hot boyfriend of yours?” she asks me as the man stands behind her brushing her hair out.
I don’t even look at her. I act like I’m enthralled in something on my phone. “He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Hrmph,” she mutters as she gets lipstick applied to her lips.
I probably don’t need to hear it. I know it’s going to gut me, but I have to ask. “How was your date?”
Her nose scrunches. “What date?”
I roll my eyes at her. “Your date with Gabe.”
She leans up in the chair. “Your boyfriend? You trying to be funny?”
I shrug. “Forget I asked.”
“You don’t know, do you? You really think we went out?” she asks me with surprise in her voice.
I don’t answer her, but I can’t keep the curiosity off my face.
“You’re done, ladies. Let’s go,” the photographer’s assistant tells us both as she ushers us to the platform. Today, I’m doing a bathing suit shoot and they have a line of us, all shapes and sizes, for the shoot. I’m positioned right next to Tabby.
When they give us a fifteen-minute break, I lean against a wall drinking a bottle of water. I’m exhausted. I’m pretty sure I’m coming down with something because I can’t do anything without needing to take a break anymore.
Tabby walks over to me and with worry on her face, she asks me, “You okay?”
I nod my head and start to walk away. But her words stop me.
She tosses her hair over her shoulder. “I never went out with your boyfriend. I mean, I tried. But he turned me down flat. He only had eyes for you.”
“But…” I tilt my head to the side. “But he said that he was taking you out.”
She laughs. “Honey, he told me no. But if he’s changed his mind have him call me.”
I watch as she walks away.
